"Wood, Light and Electricity – Three Flavors of Synthetic Chemistry"

-At present, synthetic organic chemistry largely relies on fossil carbon sources. The seminar will highlight the alternative use of wood-based renewable chemical feedstocks and of photo- and electrochemical transformations in the synthesis of organic molecules including biologically active natural products such as morphinan and curare alkaloids.

Till Opatz (born 1973) studied chemistry at the University of Frankfurt/M. and finished his diploma in 1997. In 2001, he obtained his Ph.D. with Horst Kunz / Mainz. After a postdoc in Utrecht/Netherlands, he started his independent research in Mainz in 2002, which led to his “habilitation” in 2006. In 2007, he became associate professor in Hamburg and then full professor in Mainz in 2010. His main research interests are heterocyclic chemistry, photochemistry, sustainable chemistry and natural products.
