Joe Subotnik has been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. Joe's group focuses on three different areas in chemical physics: electron and energy transfer, molecular conduction, and electronic structure theory with an emphasis on excited states. Joe joined the department in 2010.

Jeffery Saven has been promoted to the rank of Professor. Jeff's group uses primarily theory and computation to study biomolecules, polymers, and condensed phase systems. Most of the research involves the application of statistical mechanics to liquids and macromolecules. Jeff joined the Chemistry Department in 1997.

On April 1, the College of Liberal and Professional Studies (LPS) at Penn officially opened applications for its newest master’s degree: the Master of Chemical Sciences. The program, the first of its kind in the Ivy League, offers current and aspiring professionals in the chemical sciences a path to build their expertise in a compact time frame.

 

Vice Dean for Professional and Liberal Education Nora Lewis says the program has been in demand for some time.

Minh Nguyen, a graduate student in Amos Smith's laboratory, was recently awarded the Graduate Student Award of the International Precious Metals Institute (IPMI). The annual award, sponsored by Sabin Metal Corporation, was established to recognize and encourage outstanding work by a graduate student in precious metals research. Minh will recieve a cash award and an opportunity to travel to the IPMI annual conference to present his research.

A number of exceptional Chemistry graduate and undergraduate students were honored at the Department's annual awards ceremony on April 30. The highest honor that the Chemistry Department bestows on a graduating PhD student is the John G. Miller Award. This year's award went to Jacob Goldberg of the Petersson group.

Professor Madeleine Joullié will be receiving an honorary degree by Simmons College's 109th Commencement on Friday, May 9 in Boston for her remarkable career as an internationally recognized scholar and a champion of women in the field of chemistry. Madeleine received her BA degree in chemistry from Simmons. More information on the ceremony can be found here.

Professors David W. Christianson and Daniel J. Mindiola were elected Fellows of the Royal Society of Chemistry. The Royal Society of Chemistry is the largest organization in Europe for advancing the chemical sciences and traces its roots to the Chemical Society of London, established in 1841. Each year, the designation FRSC is given to a group of elected Fellows who have made major contributions to the chemical sciences.

Dr. Jessica Anna, currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto, will join the department as an assistant professor on July 1, 2014. Dr. Anna is the first hire in the School of Arts & Sciences' Energy Cluster program in the natural sciences.

Marsha I. Lester, the Edmund J. Kahn Distinguished Professor, and Larry G. Sneddon, the Blanchard Professort of Chemistry, were both honored with national awards at the ACS meeting. Marsha was awarded the Francis P. Garvan-John M. Olin Medal, which recognizes distinguished service to chemistry by women chemists. Larry received the F. Albert Cotton Award, which was established to recognize distinguished work in synthetic inorganic chemistry. Both Marsha and Larry were honored at the awards banquet in Dallas.
