The Activities for Community Education in Science (ACES) program, started by graduate students Kelsey VanGelder (Kozlowski Group) and Lyndsay Wood (Winkler Group), hosted its second successful science event for children.

Jeffrey Winkler has been elected to the John Morgan Society of the University of Pennsylvania. The Morgan Society, the oldest honorific biomedical society in the country, was founded to stimulate research in basic medical science by promoting favorable conditions for such investigations through fostering communication between its members.

Chemistry major Moses Adenaike received the NOBCChE Bayer Undergraduate Fellowship. As part of the fellowship, Moses traveled to the 41st Annual Conference held in New Orleans in September.

Assistant Professor Jessica M. Anna, who joined the department earlier this year, has been named an Elliman Faculty Fellow. Created by a gift from David Elliman, C’73, WG’77, and Dr. Andrea Branch through the BAWD Foundation, the fellowships provide startup support for faculty specializing in ways to bring renewable energy sources to market.

The program, which was founded this year by Penn Chemistry graduate students, held its inaugural event in July and has received funding from several corporate partners, as well as the American Chemical Society, the Department of Chemistry, and the Penn Women in Chemistry group. Read more here.

Gary A. Molander, Hirschmann-Makineni Professor and Chemistry Department Chair, has been selected to receive the 2015 Herbert C. Brown Award for Creative Research in Synthetic Methods. The Brown award, sponsored by the Purdue Borane Research Fund and the Herbert C. Brown Award Endowment, was established in 1998 to recognize and encourage outstanding and creative contributions to research in synthetic methods.

 

Gary will be honored at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, March 24, 2015, in conjunction with the 249th ACS national meeting in Denver.

The inaugural ACES Program was held on July 19th. The program, which is designed to run several times per year, focused on introducing local students (grades 7-11) to the sciences with a hands-on approach. They had the opportunity to learn hands-on that science is fun!

Feng Gai has been selected to receive the 2014 American Chemical Society Philadelphia Section Award. First given in 1962, this Award recognizes an individual "who, by conspicuous scientific achievement through research, has made important contributions to man's knowledge and thereby aided the public appreciation of the profession."

 

Prof. Gai will receive the award in the Department on Thursday, October 16, 2014.
