Prof. Feng Gai has been elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society. 

The citation, which will be published in the March 2012 issue of APS News, reads as follows: "For his pioneering contributions to the field of protein folding, in particular the innovative use of infrared spectroscopy and the novel development of vibrational probes to elucidate the fundamental folding mechanism."

Joe Subotnik has been named a recipient of the highly competitive ACS HP Outstanding Junior Faculty Award for 2012. Joe will receive his award at a ceremony at the ACS National Meeting in San Diego next spring. More information on the award can be found by following the link.

Larry Sneddon has been selected to receive the 2011 American Chemical Society Philadelphia Section Award. First given in 1962, this Award recognizes an individual "who, by conspicuous scientific achievement through research, has made important contributions to man's knowledge and thereby aided the public appreciation of the profession." Larry will receive the award in the Department on Thursday, October 20.

Engineering structures on the smallest possible scales -- using molecules and individual atoms as building blocks -- is both physically and conceptually challenging. An interdisciplinary team of researchers at the University of Pennsylvania has now developed a method of computationally selecting the best of these blocks, drawing inspiration from the similar behavior of proteins in making biological structures.
