Growth and Patterning of Hierarchical Structures for Energy Conversion

 

Abstract

Synthetic hierarchical structures whose dimensions and electromagnetic properties can be tuned at the nanoscale and mesoscale level present unique opportunities for energy harvesting, processing, and conversion. This talk will discuss previous achievements in the synthesis and characterization of nanowire structures for photovoltaic energy conversion, recent work in gas-phase facet-selective growth of multi-component nanostructures, and a recently developed method for patterning nanostructures with tunable periodicity over large areas. Together, these new synthetic strategies and the complex solid-state structures they engender lay the groundwork for new devices and tools for energy conversion, photonics, catalysis, and spectroscopy.
