Graduate Student Ursula Williams (Schelter group) was named as one of 12 recipients nationally of the Eli Lilly Travel Award by the Women Chemists Committee (WCC) of the American Chemical Society. This highly competitive award provides funding for female undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral fellows to travel to a national meeting and present their research. Ursula recently attended the ACS National Meeting in San Diego, CA.

James Petersson and Joe Subotnik have both been named as 2012 Sloan Research Fellows. These two-year fellowships are awarded yearly to 118 researchers in recognition of distinguished performance and a unique potential to make substantial contributions to their field.

University of Pennsylvania Provost Vincent Price and Vice Provost for Faculty Lynn Hollen Lees have appointed Professor Marisa Kozlowski to the fourth cohort of the Penn Fellows. The Penn Fellows program, begun in 2009, provides leadership development to select Penn faculty members in mid-career.

A research group led by Penn Chemistry Professor Feng Gai has devised a way to watch proteins fold in "real-time," which could lead to a better understanding of protein folding and misfolding in general. Click the link to read the full story.

Prof. Feng Gai has been elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society. 

The citation, which will be published in the March 2012 issue of APS News, reads as follows: "For his pioneering contributions to the field of protein folding, in particular the innovative use of infrared spectroscopy and the novel development of vibrational probes to elucidate the fundamental folding mechanism."

Joe Subotnik has been named a recipient of the highly competitive ACS HP Outstanding Junior Faculty Award for 2012. Joe will receive his award at a ceremony at the ACS National Meeting in San Diego next spring. More information on the award can be found by following the link.
