How to Submatriculate in Chemistry
The Process
- See the Undergraduate Chair in Chemistry or Biochemistry. Items 1-4 must be complete before you START your first course to be counted towards the MS. Typically before September of your Junior year.
- Fill out the first three pages of the application for Graduate Studies in
Chemistry. Have three of your professors write recommendation letters for
you. Send all of this to the Chemistry Graduate Coordinator in Room 130 of
the Chemistry Department.
- Send an official copy of your transcript to the Chemistry Graduate
Coordinator.
- See an Assistant Dean for Advising (College Advising Office), request and
fill out an Application for Submatriculation. Have the Dean sign it, have
your chemistry Research Advisor sign it, make an appointment to speak to the
SAS Graduate Dean, 3401 Walnut Street, suite #322A, and get his signature.
Give the Chemistry Graduate Coordinator a copy of the completed form.
Please note: If you substitute a graduate course for one that you
filled out on the Submatriculation form, you will have to fill out a new form
and have everyone sign it, giving the Graduate Coordinator the updated
copy.
- Register to graduate with the Master's degree online in the first
academic month of the semester you plan to graduate. You will receive
directions on how to write your thesis and other requirements. You will not
be giving the Graduate School a copy of your thesis, contrary to what the
directions tell you.
Requirements for the Master's Degree in Chemistry:
You need to do the following:
- Obtain a Grade Point Average of 3.0 in your major field.
- Take 6 graduate level lecture courses and receive grades of "B" or better in each of them.
- Take two c.u.'s of Chem 999 with your Research Advisor and receive grades of "B" or better.
- Have your Research Advisor sign a letter to the effect that the thesis
material either has been published or is in the process of publication.
- Write and defend a thesis. At the time you defend, give the Chem Grad
office a copy of your cover page and receive in return, forms which your
thesis Committee will sign. Your Committee consists of two members, the
Chairman and a reader. You should consult your Research Advisor as to which
of our Chemistry Professors you should ask to sit on your Committee. Return
the signed forms to the Chem Grad office and show her a copy of your signed
cover sheet. This cover sheet must be signed by your Research Advisor, your
two Committee members and the Graduate Group Chairman in Chemistry.
- Deposit two unbound copies of your thesis to the Graduate Office where
they will be sent to the Library for binding and cataloging.
