The Chemistry Major

Those considering a major in chemistry should consult with the Undergraduate Chairman as soon as possible, preferably in the freshman year, especially if you have advanced placement credits in science or mathematics courses from high school. Call 215-898-8311 or e-mail Billy Werner to make an appointment with the Undergraduate Chair.
Course Requirements for the Chemistry Major
Chemistry majors normally complete the following introductory sequences by the end of the sophomore year:- CHEM 101, 102 General Chemistry (2 c.u.)
- CHEM 053, 054 or 055 General Chemistry Laboratories (1 c.u.)
- CHEM 241, 242, 245 Organic Chemistry and Laboratory (3 c.u.)
- MATH 104, 114 Calculus (formerly Math 140, 141) (2 c.u.)
- PHYS 150, 151 Physics (3 c.u.)
- CHEM 261 Inorganic Chemistry (1 c.u.)
- CHEM 221, 222, 223 Physical Chemistry and Laboratory (3 c.u.)
- CHEM 251 Biochemistry (1 c.u.)
- CHEM 246 Advanced Laboratory (1 c.u.)
Note: Although the Chemistry Major only requires MATH 104 and 114, students wishing to pursue more advanced courses in Physical Chemistry, or other fields involving quantitative treatment of Chemistry, should consider taking additional Math courses such as MATH 240, 241, etc.
